The 407th Fighter Group (USAAF) was a home based training unit that also saw limited active service in Alaska.
The group was activated as the 407th Bombardment Group (Dive) on 28 March 1943 and joined the Second Air Force, in the US North-West.
In July-August 1943 the air echelon, equipped with the Douglas A-24 Banshee (the Air Force version of the SBD Dauntless), was posted to Alaska, where it took part in the campaign in the Aleutians.
In August 1943 the group was redesignated as the 407th Fighter-Bomber Group.
In November 1943 the group was transferred to the Third Air Force in the US South-East. Its official group HQ had been in Florida during the period in Alaska, despite the allocation to the Second Air Force.
In its new location the group was used as a replacement training unit, flying a mix of aircraft including the fighter and attack versions of the Mustang and the P-47 Thunderbolt.
The group was disbanded on 1 April 1944.
