Minor battle during First World War. The Russian Second Army, under General Alexander Samsonov, advancing without scouts, encountered an entrenched German position, and despite outnumbering the German units, were unable to make any progress. The following day, the Germans took advantage of Russian inactivity to move back to Tannenberg, in preparation to trap the Russian army.
