Siege that resulted in the capture of the last French stronghold in southern India. The British, under Eyrie Coot, were able to complete the investiture of the town on 6 December 1760, and despite a hurricane that threatened the British naval blockade, and on the 15 January 1761 the French commander, the Count de Lally, surrendered the town, ending French hopes of establishing a trading empire in India, and leaving the British East India Company triumphant.
