Battle fought at the now unknown Winwaed, a stream near Leeds, between Oswiu, then king of Bernicia, and Penda, king of Mercia, and the dominant figure of the time. Oswiu, having come close to defeat, was eventually victorious, while Penda was killed in the battle. After the battle Northumbria was for a period dominant, while Mercia was temporarily dismembered.
